He was born on May 18, 1994 in Geneva, Switzerland and is the son of a Swiss mother and a Congolese father. He began playing basketball at the age of 13 and quickly developed into a top prospect in Europe.

Capela was selected by the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2014 NBA'>NBA Draft.
