Slattery was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in a Catholic family. He attended Catholic Memorial School and The Catholic University of America, where he studied drama. After college, he moved to New York City and began his acting career in theater, appearing in productions such as The Music Man and The Iceman Cometh.
Slattery made his television debut in the late 1980s, appearing in episodes of Law & Order and Homicide: Life on the Street. He then went on to appear in films such as Kicking and Screaming, Mona Lisa Smile, and Flags of Our Fathers.
