Slattery was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in a Catholic family. He attended Catholic Memorial School and The Catholic University of America, where he studied drama. After college, he moved to New York City and began his acting career in theater, appearing in productions such as The Music Man and The Iceman Cometh.

Slattery made his television debut in the late 1980s, appearing in episodes of Law & Order and Homicide: Life on the Street. He then went on to appear in films such as Kicking and Screaming, Mona Lisa Smile, and Flags of Our Fathers. In 2007, he was cast as Roger Sterling in the AMC series Mad Men, which ran for seven seasons and earned him four Emmy nominations and four Screen Actors Guild Awards.

In addition to his acting career, Slattery has also directed several episodes of Mad Men and other television series, including Veep, The Romanoffs, and God Friended Me. He has also produced films such as God’s Pocket and In the Loop.

Slattery is married to actress Talia Balsam, and they have one son. He is an avid golfer and a fan of the Boston Red Sox. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
