Lee was born Shelton Jackson Lee in Atlanta, Georgia in 1957. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Morehouse College, where he studied film and television production. After graduating, he attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in film production.

Lee’s first feature film, She’s Gotta Have It, was released in 1986. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it established Lee as an important voice in American cinema.
